Toll-free numbers, as the name suggests, are numbers that can be called free of charge. Toll-free numbers are set up so that the person or business called is charged for the call, not the caller. Many businesses use toll-free numbers to encourage potential customers to call without charge. There are only several toll-free number codes, so identifying them is simple.
- Find the first three digits of the number after the 1. This is the area (or toll-free) code.
- Compare the area code with the four available toll-free number codes. Those codes are 800, 888, 877 and 866. If the area code matches one of these four, your call will be free.
- Call your toll-free number. The individual or business owning the number will be charged for the call.
