Resetting an IP address can be useful for certain computer and IT operations. IP addresses can be used to track internet usage and to collect data. By resetting the IP address IT operators can view web pages and other internet utilities differently as a user would see the page. Read on to learn how to reset an IP address with a DSL internet connection.

Step 1

Test your internet connection. Before you can change your IP address you need to make sure that your internet connection is working propertly. To test your internet connection open a web browser and navigate to a web page. If a page appears your internet connection is functional.

Step 2

Log in to your DSL modem, router, or gateway. Type the factory default address into your web browser and you will be taken to your DSL modem settings page. Log in using the id and password provided to you by your internet service provider.

Step 3

Click on “refresh” or “reset” settings. You will be taken to a list of further options. Then click “Renew IP”.

Step 4

Wait for your DSL modem to restart itself and to receive a new IP address from your DSL ISP. The process may take up to 10 minutes. Once the process is complete close and reopen your browser and you will be searching the internet with a reset IP address.
