If you have trouble connecting USB devices to your Windows XP machine, there are a few things you can try to do and fix the issue. The problem can be with the hardware of your machine, but if the problem developed suddenly and there is no visible damage to the computer, it is likely that a driver or software issue is causing the problem. That is much easier and faster to fix than a hardware problem.

Reinstalling and Updating Drivers

1. The first thing you should try to do is uninstall and reinstall your USB drivers. To do this, disconnect all USB devices from your computer, then open the Control Panel, go to the “Administrative Tools” section, then open the “Device Manager.” Find the USB entries, right-click on them and choose the uninstall option. Restart your computer. Windows XP will begin the automatic installation of the USB drivers.

If this doesn’t work, install fresh drivers, such as the Microsoft USB 2.0 drivers that are available through a Microsoft update. To perform this update, click on the “Start” button, go to the “Programs” and choose the “Windows Update” option. The “Windows Update” option also is located in the Control Panel. Install all recommended updates, then restart your computer. Your USB ports should start working correctly.

Updating and Reinstalling Other Software

2. If reinstalling the USB drivers does not solve your issue, you may have a problem with the software in another portion of your computer. Try to update your computer’s BIOS by going to the website of your computer manufacturer and downloading and installing any available BIOS updates. Perform a backup of your computer’s data before doing this, since BIOS updates–if done incorrectly–can prevent your computer from starting. Once you install the BIOS update, restart your computer and check to see if your USB ports are working. If not, look for any other available updates produced by your computer manufacturer, as there may be a fix available for a specific problem they are aware of.

If none of these options work, consider the possibility that a cable has come loose inside your computer or that your USB ports have become damaged. If you are comfortable looking inside your computer, you can do so and see if there are any obvious problems. If you are not comfortable doing this, you should contact a reputable computer repair person or call the support line for your computer manufacturer.
